Radio

I have written both news stories and science features for broadcast on National Public Radio stations.

The radio format poses both challenges and rewards for me as a writer. I enjoy condensing a complicated topic into its most important elements; it brings me to a greater understanding of the subject and connects me to the audience, people who might otherwise think subjects like tetanus or honey bees hold little interest.

Short Science Features
I currently write scripts for MicrobeWorld, a 90-second radio spot aired by National Public Radio stations across the country. A few examples of my work for MicrobeWorld include:
Life on Mars and Methane. Broadcast January 7, 2008.
Climate Change and Plant Parasites. Broadcast December 21, 2007.
Tetanus Among Us. Broadcast November 29, 2007.

News Features
As a Mass Media Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2001, I worked for a time as an on-air science correspondent for WOSU, a National Public Radio affiliate in Columbus, Ohio. The topics I covered during this time ranged from the effects of sulfur emissions from a coal-burning power plant to the latest results of research from labs at Ohio State University. I pitched, planned, interviewed, wrote, voiced, and produced stories for broadcast on the evening and morning local news segments.
